This retrospective takes its name from an installation created by the artist as a critical look at the photographs she took during the popular uprising in Nicaragua in 1978 and 1979. The title, Mediations, reflects Meiselas’ overarching aspirations for photography: “You think it is useful to go out into the world or you don’t. I am someone who does see the value in that. But it is only worth doing if you become a bridge for information and ideas.”

The exhibition rejects the notion that war photography is a man’s business. It highlights the work of eight female photographers who bravely stood their ground in dangerous, male-dominated situations on the front lines, from the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) to the battlefields of Afghanistan in 2014.

The exhibition “New Works” presents a selection of new acquisitions for the Art Collection Deutsche Börse. The presentation brings together works from different geographical regions in Europe, the USA, South Africa and Central America, and spans a temporal arc from the middle of the 20th century to the present. The artists shown deal with social and political issues; They draw attention to areas of social tension and draw attention to grievances. The far-reaching consequences of climate change or the diverse reasons for migration and flight find their way into the exhibition, as do questions about social justice or forms of political protest. In dealing with essential social challenges, the artists develop individual, yet universally readable visual languages that offer space for dialogue. The artists are: Mohammed Bourouissa , Alejandro Cartagena , Daniel Castro Garcia , Larry Clark , Anton Kusters , Susan Meiselas , Philip Montgomery , Anastasia Samoylova , Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse .
